Chickacoan Farm amber baby

Amber's beautiful female cria was born on June 7, but it was immediately apparent that she suffered from a breathing abnormality, most likely choanal atresia.  In short, she could not or would not nurse and breathe simultaneously.  I had read about this condition and was sure it could never happen to me, because I was careful to choose superior studs for our "upward  breeding" farm.  Maybe I wanted this cria too much and hexed myself, but whatever the reason, the cria, tube-fed and loaded with antibiotics, failed to master nursing and was put down on the evening of her second day of life.  Her tiny grave is in a shaded corner of the pasture, but she has gone on to a place where she can breathe and romp to her heart's content!  Amber was an excellent mom and will be bred to another stud in the fall.

After a long and challenging labor, Josefina's cria finally arrived.  We had hoped for a black female, but Mom knows best.  Meet Tomo, a darling male with his mother's beautiful silver coloring and his sire's magnificent crimp!  We'll keep him

Our New Barn
Kathy with Marty McGee

Welcome to our website! We are the Hancock family, and we live in the area between the Potomac and Rappahannock Rivers called the Northern Neck of Virginia. I am Kathy, a Medical Technologist hoping to retire in a few years, and an animal lover from the day I was born. David is the retired Yankee from Pennsylvania who finagled his way into my heart. On the day of our first wedding anniversary, we returned from Kazakhstan with our adopted children Danelya and Justin. In the years to follow, our home, KritterKorner, has sheltered cats, dogs, guinea pigs, hermit crabs, geckos, bearded dragons, turtles, and freshwater aquarium fish.

In anticipation of college expenses while gearing down to retirement, I researched home-based businesses. Imagine my surprise, and joy, to find a reference to the potentially profitable, tax deductible alpaca lifestyle! We had the land, and after visiting several farms, we caught the "alpaca bug." Within weeks we acquired our starter herd, and our farm, Chickacoan Alpacas, has become a reality.
We plan to improve our herd with each breeding, and aim for correct conformation, fleece that is crimpy, fine, and dense, and animals with good temperament. Finally, we will endeavor to keep learning and hopefully to mentor new alpaca owners.

Thanks for visiting, and God Bless!
